Review of The Westin, St Maarten

Before coming to the Westin I was a bit hesitant due to a lot of the negative reviews. My boyfriend and I just got back from a weeklong there and we had a wonderful time. The hotel is a little far from everything, and we got lost on the way there. Luckily, the concierge has very clear written directions to get almost anywhere on the island, so we never got lost again after that.

The hotel is about 20-30 minutes from anywhere you want to go. It is however, a good base to get to all the great restaurants on the french side, in Grand Case. The pool is very nice and the beach is actually really nice comparatively.

A few recommendations: Big Fish right next to the hotel is OUTSTANDING. we ate there twice we were so impressed with it. the portions are generous, the decor is beautiful, and the service was great. while on the island we also ate at Le Ti Provencal, La Villa, Spiga (best meal we had all week), Temptation (also excellent but far, in Maho), and Grandduca also in Maho.

Pinel island is a MUST and not that far from the hotel. Orient bay was also great. Go on a Sunday and stay for the party. Mondays at LeShore in Grand Case was a scene, very European. St Barts was gorgeous and a must see. $80 ferry roundtrip from Oyster Bay right next to the hotel. Take meds or buy one of the anti-seasickness bracelets though as almost everyone on the boat was sick from the ride.

We will definitely come back and stay at the Westin. Just be prepared for a lot of driving, as you have to rent a car to get around the island.
Sarafinas in Marigot is a must go for bkfst but its quite far, so we only did this two days.

Overall, we highly recommend the island. We usually go to Aruba which is our favorite, but this is a completely different trip. You have to be prepared to do a little exploring. It feels like you are in Europe, for half the price of getting there.
